MUSIC FOR THE SPIRIT
......where I explored this exciting new aspect of my life. I soon found the opportunity to compose a series of piano pieces to accompany prayer, offertory and communion moments during worship. As I began leading a children’s, and later, youth choir, I found a need and the desire to arrange, adapt or compose new songs. It is my prayer that you find an essence of hope, grace and joy in these compositions that I've composed with The Spirit.

Throughout the past several years I have composed these pieces to be performed as musical accompaniment for offertory, prayer and communion moments during our Sunday worship. In each I have tried to convey simply a specific emotion or Godly experience using a defined compositional device or technique. All twelve pieces are tonal in nature and might be best described as classical piano composition merging with a soothing new-age sound.

Each piano piece is available in PDF format from the store. Individual tracks as mp3’s or the complete CD recording can also be purchased.

I wanted to write a piece that shared and commented on my own newly begun spiritual journey. After much contemplation I focused on the idea of a four movement piece based upon the four step approach to prayer presented by St. Francis of Assisi, ACTS. I felt that the use of simple major and minor chords, as the harmonic basis for the work, would be properly expressive of the content. To get into a different method of writing, since most of my composition is done to film, I decided to go off on a three day composing “retreat”. Each morning I woke up and meditated and prayed for 30-45 minutes before I began my writing. I focused on one movement at a time, and tried to let the music pour out, guided by the spirit, in a very quick and natural process. I didn't want to stop and analyze what I was doing, as I was doing it. This is the first piece that I have composed in which my spiritual convictions were expressed.

The score and parts are available from Alfred Publications.

Today we all know someone who is in the midst of a great ordeal: suffering physical loss, experiencing great pain, and yet, still striving to heal and continue life. As this journey unfolds, one relies upon our physicians to address our physical ailments. We find that the emotional and spiritual battles encountered are much like those experienced during other losses in life (death of a loved one, divorce, loss of job). This "journey through grief" exhibits stages including shock, denial, weeping, depression, guilt, anger and finally, acceptance. Movements Through Grief follows and comments on this journey. In searching for poetry that speaks to these experiences, I found myself drawn to the Psalms. These writings continue to offer a ray of hope and encouragement, no matter what challenging circumstance may occur. By reading these words we see that we are not alone in our struggles and that for millennia others have had the same agonies as ourselves and looked to one source for strength, inspiration, hope and renewal.
